Occupational hearing screening

Hearing surveillance for staff exposed to workplace noise. This is not the free public hearing test and not a personal-injury claim. It is a paid service for employers (and the self-employed who need a baseline on file).

When the law expects it

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Health surveillance is required where the risk assessment shows a risk to hearing — typically at or above the upper exposure action value (85 dB(A)) or if an employee already has hearing damage from noise. HSE L108 is the practical guide.

What we do

Questionnaire, otoscopy, pure-tone audiometry, categorisation of results, a letter for the employee and a management summary for the employer (no unnecessary clinical detail). Referral advice if the trace needs a GP or ENT.

Where

12 Devonshire Place, Marylebone, or on-site if you have a quiet room. Construction, workshops, music venues, catering plant, logistics and offices with plant rooms are typical. London and the Berkshire towns we already visit.

How a programme usually runs

Baseline soon after the person starts noisy work (or now, if you have never tested). Then annual for about two years. If results are stable, many programmes move to every three years — HSE sets the framework; your risk assessment sets the diary. Anyone with a significant drop comes back sooner.

We do not issue HSE “approval” stickers. We do competent audiometry and written results you can keep for the health record.

Confidentiality

The employer gets fitness-for-surveillance style information and that a referral was advised. They do not get a gossip copy of the audiogram unless the employee agrees or the law requires it. Employees get their own numbers explained.

What this is not

Not a noise survey (you still need a competent noise assessment). Not PPE supply. Not a guarantee that a later industrial-deafness claim will fail or succeed. If a solicitor later wants an expert report, that is a separate medico-legal instruction — screening notes can be used, they are not a Part 35 report.

Fees

Quoted per person or per site visit. The public “free hearing test” does not apply to occupational lists. Ask for a written rate before you send a roster.
